A click can be a normal control step, or it can be the clue that the furnace is trying to start and not completing the heat cycle. The useful detail is what happens after the click: silence, hum, blower-only air, repeated attempts, or a safety warning.
Without opening panels, note whether the thermostat display is on, whether the furnace makes one click or repeated clicks, whether a hum follows, and whether the blower ever moves warm air. That sequence helps separate a control call, ignition attempt, blower-only symptom, or system lockout.
Stop cycling the furnace if the click turns into buzzing, a hot electrical smell, smoke, arcing, a breaker trip, repeated failed starts, or any gas smell. If gas smell is present, leave the area and use the gas utility or emergency path before treating it like normal HVAC service.
