A light dusty smell can happen when heat runs after sitting, but a hot electrical, smoky, or burning-plastic smell is different. If the smell is sharp, strong, or paired with shutdowns, stop testing and treat it like a safety clue.
A mild dusty odor at the first heat call of the season should fade quickly. A smell that gets stronger, smells like hot plastic or electrical heat, or comes with smoke, buzzing, arcing, shutdowns, or a breaker trip should not be ignored.
Turn the system off and stop resetting it if you notice smoke, a hot electrical smell, burning plastic, a repeated breaker trip, or any sign of arcing. If there is a gas smell, leave the area and use the gas utility or emergency path before normal HVAC service.
