Buzzing, humming, clicking, or repeated start attempts can point to different electrical or startup problems. The useful first step is to describe the timing and behavior, not guess at the part.
A buzz or click near the outdoor unit can happen when the system is trying to answer a cooling call but something is not completing the startup sequence. Contactors, capacitors, fan motors, compressors, wiring, power, thermostat calls, and safety switches can overlap in how they sound.
If the outdoor unit buzzes without starting, clicks repeatedly, trips a breaker, smells hot, or starts and stops, shut the system off at the thermostat and request a diagnostic. Repeated resets can make an electrical problem worse.
