If the AC keeps running, the important first step is to separate normal heavy heat operation from a thermostat, blower, airflow, coil, or control problem. Do not keep testing the system if you notice a hot smell, buzzing, smoke, or a breaker trip.
Look at whether the outdoor unit is still running, the indoor blower is still blowing air, or both. An indoor blower that runs after cooling stops can point to thermostat, fan setting, control, or indoor-unit behavior. An outdoor unit that will not stop points to a different diagnostic path.
On very hot Springfield days, longer run times can happen. The concern is when the house never catches up, humidity stays high, airflow feels weak, the outdoor coil looks restricted, or the system runs constantly with poor comfort.
