A hot electrical smell is different from stale dust at startup. If the AC smells like burning plastic, smoke, overheated wiring, or the outdoor unit hums and will not start, shut the system off and treat it like a safety clue.
Turn cooling off at the thermostat and do not keep cycling the system to see if the smell comes back. If the smell came from the breaker panel, outlet, disconnect, or wiring area, stop there and use the appropriate electrical or emergency path before a normal HVAC visit.
Smoke, visible arcing, a scorched smell at the panel, a breaker that will not stay on, or a strong burning odor needs the system left off. Leave the equipment alone until the unsafe condition is handled by the right pro.
