AC not working after a power outage or storm? Give it a careful restart, not repeated resets.

Power interruptions, storms, and breaker trips can leave an AC waiting on a time delay, locked out at the thermostat, or protecting itself from an electrical problem. The safe move is to check the obvious items once, watch what the indoor and outdoor units do, then request a diagnostic if it does not restart normally.

Safe observation sequence

Check the restart once without forcing the equipment.

You only need access to the thermostat and a safe view of the equipment. This sequence stays outside the equipment. Do not open panels, touch wiring, bypass a safety, or keep resetting a breaker.

  1. Wait for the restart delay

    After power returns, leave the thermostat on cool and wait several minutes before judging whether the system restarted.

  2. Observe the thermostat and equipment

    From a safe location, note whether the thermostat is on, the indoor blower runs, and the outdoor unit starts after the delay.

  3. Stop after a repeat trip or warning sign

    If the breaker trips again, or you notice smoke, arcing, a hot smell, humming, or buzzing, stop testing and request a diagnostic.

  4. Send the observations

    Text the address, city, power-return time, and what each part of the system did so Scott can prepare for the diagnostic.

Give the system a few minutes first

Many systems have a delay after power returns. Set the thermostat to cool, lower the set temperature, and wait several minutes. Notice whether the thermostat display is on, whether the indoor blower starts, and whether the outdoor unit starts after the delay.

Check the breaker once, then stop if it trips again

If the AC breaker is tripped, one reset may tell you whether the outage or storm caused a temporary trip. If it trips again, hums, buzzes, smells hot, or the outdoor unit tries and fails to start, stop resetting it and request a service call and diagnostic.

Ask about surge protection before the next storm
