What the sound can tell you
Rattling usually means something is loose, vibrating, or getting hit by airflow or a fan path. Grinding or scraping deserves more caution because it can mean a moving part is stressed, misaligned, or failing.

A rattle can be a loose panel or debris. A grinding, scraping, or hard vibration can point to a motor, fan, bearing, blower, or mounting problem. The safest next step is to describe the sound clearly and avoid forcing the system to keep running if it sounds mechanical.
When to shut the AC off
If the noise sounds like metal scraping, the outdoor fan blade looks like it is wobbling, the indoor blower sounds harsh, the unit smells hot, or a breaker trips, turn the system off at the thermostat and request a diagnostic. Do not keep cycling it to see if the sound goes away.
