A hissing, bubbling, or gurgling sound can point to more than one issue. Do not assume refrigerant is the answer just because the system sounds different. The useful starting point is where the sound is coming from and what the AC is doing.
Hissing or bubbling can show up around line-set, coil, drain, valve, or pressure-related problems. It can also be confused with normal airflow, water movement, or a short sound during shutdown. The sound matters more when it comes with weak cooling, ice, long run times, or a sudden no-cool problem.
If the system is frozen, shut cooling off and let it thaw before the visit. If there is a hot electrical smell, smoke, arcing, buzzing at the disconnect, or a breaker trips, stop testing and request a diagnostic instead of resetting it again.
